King Leopold II of Belgium, the butcher of the Congo, does not make me proud to be a Belgian! He had the hands cut off of slaves who did not meet the quota of the day. That meant a lot of hands… It’s a disgrace and in this painting I denounce him and the Belgian state for it. You can see the blood dripping from the wounded arm of the slave behind him and also flowing down the river to the right. Not a pleasant sight, but that is the whole point of this artwork.
